The SPI-Chem Chromium Chips are 99.95% pure chromium and are shaped specifically for applications in electron microscopy, especially for shadow casting. Evaporated chromium yields a different kind of background than for example, platinum, and for some samples, it clearly is more desirable. The downside of chromium is that it oxidizes fairly quickly and in order to realize a reasonably small grain size during evaporation, the vacuum must be well into the 10
-6
range and also, once formed, the chromium coating is quite prone to oxidation. The usual mode of evaporation is from a
tungsten basket.
The SPI-Chem chromium chips irregularly shaped, flat pieces approximately 1 mm thick and several mm in lateral dimensions. They are specifically sized so that they are small enough for one to weigh out a desired mass but large enough to stay in an evaporation basket and not slip through the turns in the wire.
If a really fine grain chromium coating is needed for examination of SEM samples at high resolution, then consider the
SPI CrC-150 Chromium Coater
. Or if you are concerned about the short longevity of a chromium coating, and are interested in alternatives,
consider the OPC-60 Osmium Plasma Coater
.
