SPI Supplies® Brand YAG Single Crystal Scintillator
The scintillator that lasts forever!
SPI YAG Single Crystal Scintillator
Extra long life... Ultrahigh transmission!
Made of yttrium aluminum garnet activated with trivalent cerium,
the YAG exhibits ultrahigh light transmission-
97% at 560nm. But the most important advantage is the high resistance of the single crystal
scintillator to radiation damage. When compared to P-47, the useful
lifetime is essentially forever. In addition, there are other advantages:
- Excellent signal-to-noise ratio.
- TV compatible with fast decay time (80 ns).
- High temperature tolerance, Bakeablility to 400 °C
- Easily detects samples high in cathodoluminescence i.e. gallium arsenide.
- UHV "compatible", even more so than a coated P-47 scintillator
- Atomic number differences of 0.1 on object analysis.
- Chemical formula: Y3Al5O12
- Refractive index: 1.84 at 550 nm
- Bulk density: 4.551 g/cm3
- Aluminum coated on polished side for instant installation in your SEM which can be removed with NaOH solution.
- Standard shapes: Discs from 5 to 40 mm, 0.5 to 1.0 mm in thickness, one side polished, other side matte ground.
- Self-absorption: 20% for 5 mm light path
The maximum output of the YAG scintillator is at 560 nm
which is quite different from the output for P47 scintillators
other wise used in SEMs. Hence the S11 PMT found in most SEMs as
standard equipment will not produce the optimum performance when
using a YAG and indeed if one really wants to use a YAG, they should
consider converting their PMT to an S20 type PMT which is optimized for
accepting light emission at 560 nm. If you don't want to change your PMT,
then we would strongly suggest converting to the YAP instead of the YAG
because then you can continue to use your existing
style S11 PMT. It is sometimes useful to
appreciate the differences in physical and luminescence properties between
YAG and YAP and we have compared them on our
YAG/YAP Comparison Table.
We also provide the Excitation Spectrum for YAG at 300° K.
Thickness Specifications:
Thickness can be between 0.5 to 1.0mm, because the thickness for SEM
application is not important except where specifically noted.
For non-SEM applications where a more specific thickness (e.g. 0.5mm) is
important, add $75.00.
Over the years, we have developed a series of
Special Use Hints.
Just remember that not all scintillators come out of the
same "shop" and there is a wide difference in quality.
And sometimes in price. You can be sure that the SPI YAG scintillators
are the very highest quality available and are
the same ones specified by many of the world's leading SEM manufacturers.
