Information about structure of yttrium aluminum perovskite
We are often times asked to comment about just what is the structure of
the YAP material.
Regular perovskite is CaTiO3 - a large
divalent cation Ca and a small tetravalent cation Ti making a total
of 6 valencies. The perovskite structure is very accommodating to all
sorts of chemical elements, providing they are of the right relative
sizes, and Y - yttrium is large trivalent, and Al is small trivalent,
so these two elements fit into the same structure quite happily, hence
the formula YAlO3.
