SPI Supplies® Brand Economy Ductless Portable Fume Hoods

Select the right filters for your application.

These filters are designed and sized to fit the SPI Supplies Brand Economy Ductless Portable Fume Hoods only. If you have an SPI Supplies Brand Economy ductless fume hood, then these are the right size filters for your hood.

If you do not have an SPI Supplies Brand Economy fume hood and still have to select the right hood for you, then you have a number of different sizes and styles to choose from.

Selection of the filters:

This last and final step is perhaps the most important part of our selection process to determine which of the filters for your SPI Supplies ductless portable fume hood are best for your application as well as your budget. There is basically a "short list" of available filter types, most being one form or another of carbon or carbon black which has been impregnated with one or more proprietary ingredients for the purpose of neutralizing and capturing the hazardous and/or toxic chemical (s). Generally, the carbon based filter elements are used for capturing vapors and the HEPA filter is used for capturing particulates.

If you have decided to purchase a new SPI "Economy" ductless portable fume hood, you must keep in mind that the two smaller sizes have the capacity for two different types of filters and the largest unit, has the capacity for four filters, two of each of two different types. For example, if you were purchasing the EH-23, and if you were working with glutaraldehyde and some toxic particulates, you would want to purchase one each of the filter optimized for glutaraldehyde and the filter optimized for particulates (HEPA). But if you were purchasing the largest unit, the EH-48, you would be purchasing two of the glutaraldehyde filters and two of the HEPA filters. But we do want to stress that these filter elements are designed only for use with the Economy family of SPI Supplies Brand fume hoods.

Below you will find listed the available filters for the SPI Economy line of ductless portable fume hoods. We do not recommend the Economy hoods to be used with osmium tetroxide, and one should select one of our higher end models.

Filter Types

GP Plus:
This is the most widely used filter, primarily used for solvent fume removal. It is manufactured from coconut shell based activated carbon of 5-10 mesh size and a surface area of up to 1300m?/g. Filtration is achieved by the physical absorption of molecules in the pores of the activated carbon by van der Waals forces.

ACR:
This filter is impregnated with halide salts, and is used for the high efficiency removal of iodine and methyl iodide. It is frequently used for iodination reactions with low level radioactive iodine. Efficiencies in excess of 99% have been measured.

ACM:
This filter is impregnated with iodine compounds for removal of mercury vapor. The filter has been demonstrated to remove mercury from a saturated airstream at ambient temperature to below 5 parts per billion (ppb) in the exhaust air stream.

CYN:
A multi-impregnated filter to a military specification, for the removal of hydrogen cyanide gas. Many cyanide compounds will evolve HCN gas if acidified, so this filter is normally specified if working with any cyanide compound.

FOR:
This filter is impregnated with an oxidizing agent to oxidize formaldehyde to formate salts. It is widely used in hospital pathology and histology laboratories. It is also used in microscopy laboratories where glutaraldehyde is extensively used.

ETH:
Diethyl ether is adsorbed on activated carbon, but because of its low boiling point, the local heat of adsorption can reduce the capacity of the filter. Special impregnation allows a chemical reaction which increases the filter capacity.

HEPA:
The High Efficiency Particulate Air filter is a pleated glass fiber material, sealed with epoxy resin in an aluminum frame. Each filter is tested to ensure stated particle efficiency (usually 99.997%) according to BS 3928 or US Standard 209B. A HEPA filter is also referred to as an absolute filter.
