Negafile offers special drawers for just about everything imaginable
that might have to be stored in a microscopy laboratory. Each box
is designed for long term storage under archival like conditions.
Very often the advantages of wood over metal systems is overlooked,
but the natural porosity of the wood acts as a subtle kind of desiccator
and insulator, providing an environment that is both dry and inert, the
best kind of conditions for long lasting archival like characteristics
of the system.
We are often times asked about the comparison between storage
cabinets of wood vs. metal construction, especially from the context
of the two most common of laboratory nightmares: fire and sprinkler
system failure. While there can never be any guarantees, after all,
wood will burn, the wood construction is far more precision and water
tight than the average metal construction cabinet. We have been told
of instances where there has been sprinkler system failure and everything
was soaking wet but the contents of the Negafile wood boxes were left bone
dry!
In the case of fire, those in laboratories tend to be more of a "flash"
nature and such fires, while possibly attaining high temperatures, the
heat from which is quickly transmitted through the walls of metal cabinets,
wood on the other hand, acts as a superb insulator, and again, we have been
told of instances where the contents of the wooden Negafile boxes were
undamaged but the contents of metal boxes were destroyed.
So while there can never be any guarantees, if it was up to us to make
a decision as to which kind of construction would be more likely to
survive that kind of a typical laboratory "nightmare", we would
choose wood over metal every time!
