Bright field microscopy applications


Bright field light microscopy is the most commonly used method of light microscopy in the world. It is used not only in the life sciences, but also materials science, metallurgy, geology, electronics, just about anywhere a light microscope is used. Generally speaking, in bright field work one is not normally concerned about inadequate light levels, hence sensitivity of the camera might not be as critical a consideration. Good color rendition is very important, however, especially when one is staining (and quantifying) color uptake in biological tissue, looking at histology slices, etc.

On the other hand, if you are doing only fluorescence microscopy, a monochrome camera could very well be best for you. The ultimate color you will get is going to be done by the use of a pseudo-color palette via your software, so a color capable camera is not necessary. And since you are eliminating the color filters associated with any color camera, you will filter out less illumination and therefore "have a greater ability to work at low" to "capture more" light levels, something common to most fluorescent microscopy imaging.

Long exposures of the type dictated by low light levels, are generally not encountered with bright field imaging, therefore the need for a cooled camera is generally not present.

So if you are planning many bright field applications, you really have to give some consideration to the pixel count/price trade offs so that you get the system you need and that will do the job, but at the same time, are not purchasing more camera than you need.
