Osmium Plasma Coaters
Possibilities for making carbon support films for TEM
Introduction:
We had high hopes that carbon, when deposited via the PVD process in the OPC
units, would end up as a thin film that could be used as a TEM support film.
However, after considerable research and testing by the staff at SPI
Supplies, working in cooperation with the scientists and technical people
first at Nippon Laser and Electronics and then, at Laser Techno, have been
unable to identify conditions such that a suitable carbon film could be
prepared in this way and meet the test for a TEM support film.
The next generation:
We believe that in order to obtain superior films that would be
structureless and featureless, we would need to install a turbo pump,
resulting in both a higher vacuum and also cleaner environment. Preliminary
indications would suggest that the carbon films produced this way are indeed
structureless and featureless. We presently have under development and
working in cooperation with Laser Techno Co., Ltd.,
the development of a turbo pumped OPC system.
Unfortunately it is just too early to announce the new technology as a new
product or to give any estimate as to its price. Watch these webpages for
further news on the development of this hybrid OPC system with a turbo
coater.
