Emergency overview:
Physical Health Hazards: Eye, skin, and inhalation hazards exist.
Physical state: Liquid
Color: Clear to straw liquid
Odor: Mild odor
Odor threshold: No data available
Potential Health Effects:
Routes of exposure
Eye contact, inhalation, skin contact
Signs and Symptoms of Acute Exposure:
Skin contact:
May produce irritation or contact dermatitis which may be delayed
several hours. Prompt and thorough washing with soap and water
will reduce or elminate potential dermal effects.
Inhalation:
Inhalation of vapors or particulates may irritate the respiratory
tract. Overexposure may produce coughing, headache, and nausea.
Eye contact:
Will cause immediate or delayed severe eye irritation, experienced
as discomfort or pain, tear production, inflammation of conjunctive.
Corneal injury may result.
Ingestion:
Not known.
Chronic Health Effects Summary:
Chronic toxicity: Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane has been found
to be weakly mutagenic in Ames in vitro
screening. In vivo studies have shown
that repeated exposure to this material, even at
otherwise toxic doses, does not cause any mutagenic
events. No tumerogenic response to the chronic
recurrent application of the material to the skin
of mice was observed.
Conditions Aggravated by Exposure:
No known conditions are aggravated by this material.
Eyes: In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with flowing water
for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention, preferably
from an opthalmologist.
Skin: Flush with water, then wash with soap and water.
Inhalation: Move exposed individual to fresh air, call a physician.
Ingestion: Never give fluids or induce vomiting if patient is unconscious
or having convulsions. Get immediate medical attention.
Note to physician:
This product reacts with water in the acid contents of the stomach
to form methanol. The combination of visual disturbances, metabolic
acidosis and formic acid in urine is evidence of methanol poisoning.
The therapeutic intravenous administration of ethanol (10 mls/hour)
allows methanol to be preferentially oxidized and reduces production
of methanol metabolites. Acidosis must be treated with intravenous
administration of sodium bicarbonate and methanol elimination may be
increased by hemodialysis, as indicated. Treatments should be based
on blood methanol levels and acid- base balance.
Flammability classification: Not classified.
Flash Point/Method: 135°C (276°F) COC
Auto-Ignition Temperature: N/A
Flammable Limits: Lower: Not applicable
Upper: Not applicable
Hazardous Combustion Products:
Irritating fumes and organic acid vapors may develop when
material is exposed to elevated temperatures.
Special Conditions to Avoid:
High temperatures
Extinguishing Media:
Water spray, foam carbon dioxide, dry chemical
Fire Fighting Instructions:
Avoid eye and skin contact, do not breathe fumes or inhale vapors.
Release response:
Cover spill with absorbant material. Transfer to a suitable
container for later disposal.
Recommended disposal:
May be incinerated. Alternatively, absorb onto clay or
vermiculite and dispose of absorbent material as solid
waste. Follow all chemical pollution control regulations.
Storage and handling: Store in sealed containers. Keep container dry.
Store away from excessive heat. Keep container
closed to prevent contamination.
Personal Protection:
Skin: Protective clothing such as long sleeves or a lab coat should be
worn. When handling heated materials, also be sure to use
heat-resistant gloves, boots and face protection.
Eye: Always use safety glasses, even for work with small quantities.
Boiling Point: 290° C pH: Not applicable Vapor Pressure: 120°C (248°F) Viscosity: 3.2 cSt Specific Gravity: 1.070 Water solubility: Reacts with water Melting/Freezing Point: < -70°C (-94°F) Evaporation Rate: Not applicable Appearance and color: Clear to straw liquid with mild color Molecular Weight: 236.34
Chemical Stability:
The product is stable in sealed containers.
Conditions to Avoid:
Material is combustible, therefore avoid contact with heat,
sparks, or open flame.
Incompatibility (materials to avoid):
Reacts with water and moisture in air liberating methanol.
Can react exothermic with amines.
Hazardous Products of Deposition:
Organic acid vapors
Reactions with Air and Water:
It reacts
Component:
3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane
Oral toxicity:
Oral rat, LD50: 8400 mg/kg. Oral toxicity is associated with methanol,
a hydrolysis product which causes nausea, vomiting, headache, visual
effects including blindness. Onset of symptoms may be delayed for up
to 48 hours.
Exotoxicity:
Exotoxicity is expected to be low based on the reactivity with water.
Environmental Fate:
No information found in our selected references.
Bioaccumulation:
Not expected to occur.
Recycle to process, if possible. Dispose of only according to
local custom and regulation.
