Emergency overview:
This material is not hazardous by OSHA Hazard Communication
Definition
Signal Word
CAUTION!
Chronic Hazard: No
Accute Health Hazard: Slight
Contact Hazard: Slight
Fire Hazard: None
Physical Health Hazards:
None known
Physical state: Solid
Color: Transparent and colorless
Odor: None
Odor threshold: Not applicable
Potential Health Effects:
Routes of exposure
Ingestion
Signs and Symptoms of Acute Exposure:
None known
Skin contact:
None known
Inhalation:
If the product is used as intended, it just not possible to
envision how one could "inhale" this solid material.
Eye contact:
Mechanical irritation is not envisioned as being possible.
Ingestion:
Ingestion is unlikely, so long as product is used as intended.
Chronic Health Effects Summary:
No known chronic health effects.
Conditions Aggravated by Exposure:
No known conditions are aggravated by this material.
Take proper precautions to ensure your own health and safety before
attempting to rescue and providing first aid. For specific information
refer to the Emergency Overview in Section of this MSDS.
Inhalation: If this occurs, contact physician at once.
Eye Contact: Wash eyes with clean low-pressure water. If
irritation persists, seek medical advice. It
is not envisioned that eye contact requiring
this kind of response could ever occur.
Skin Contact: No adverse health effects are anticipated, however
if irritation developes, then contact physician at
once.
Ingestion: Contact physician at once.
NFPA Rating: Not known
Flammability classification:
Not classified.
Flash Point/Method: Not applicable
Auto-Ignition Temperature: Not known
Flammable Limits: Lower: Not applicable
Upper: Not applicable
Hazardous Combustion Products:
Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide
Special Conditions to Avoid:
None known
Extinguishing Media:
Small fires: Water spray, foam carbon dioxide, dry chemical.
Large fires: Water spray, foam carbon dioxide, dry chemical.
Fire Fighting Instructions:
Protective Equipment/Clothing: Wear a NIOSH approved positive
pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and firefighter
turnout gear. However, we would consider this kind of protection
not necessary if the small laboratory quantities are involved,
that is, the levels envisioned for research quantities.
Instructions: Use flooding quantities of water until well after
fire is out.
Release response:
Pick up and retain for recycle or disposal. Do not flush
spilled material to the sewer or the environment.
Reportable Quantities: See Section 15: Regulatory information.
Handling: No particular precautions are needed. If working
around highly flammable materials, some attention
has to be paid to the tendency of cellulose acetate
to pick up a static charge. No particular precautions
would be needed when cutting our a small piece of the
product for use in an experiment with the normal exception
of eye protection.
Storage: Avoid wide variations in temperature and humidity. Best
stored between 15°C(59°F) and 23°C(73°F). Avoid exposure to
solvent vapors. Do not store in bright sunlight. Keep
container dry. Keep away from strong oxidizing agents.
Engineering Controls: If user operations generate dust or fumes,
ventilate area to prevent accumulation. However, such use would be outside
the scope for which this product was originally released.
Personal Protection:
Inhalation: Use appropriate respiratory protection where atmosphere
exceeds recommended limits. Total Dust (PNOC): ACGIH 10 mg/M3,
OSHA 15 mg/M3. Respirable Dust(PNOC) ACGIH 3 mg/M3, OSHA 5 mg/M3.
Skin: Protective clothing such as long sleeves or a lab coat should
be worn. When handling heated materials, also be sure to use heat-resistant
gloves, boots and face protection.
Eye: Always use safety glasses, even for work with small quantities,
such as the making of positive replicas. The concern is really more from
the acetone solvent being used to soften and dissolve the cellulose acetate.
Boiling Point/Range: Not applicable
pH: Not applicable
Vapor Pressure: Not applicable
Viscosity: Not applicable
Specific Gravity:
Solid/Liquid 1.31 - 1.32 (water = 1)
Vapor Not applicable
Water solubility: Insoluble
Melting/Freezing Point: Not applicable
Evaporation Rate: Not applicable
Vapor Density (Air = 1): Not applicable/Not available
Percent volatiles by volume: Not applicable/Not available
Chemical Stability: The product is stable
Conditions to Avoid: None known, however the material should be kept
away from high temperatures and open flames.
Incompatibility with: Strong oxidizers
Hazardous Products of Deposition: Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide,
acetic acid
Reactions with Air and Water: Does not react with air, water or other
common materials.
Summary: Not considered to be toxic to humans or animals
Component: Cellulose diacetate, Diethyl phthalate
LC50 (INHL): None listed by manufacturer
Skin Effects: No skin effects are expected from exposure to cellulose
contact.
Acute Oral Effects: None known
Acute Inhalation Effects: None known
Chronic Effects/Carcinogenicity:
None expected
Reproductive/Development Effects:
No reproductive or developmental effects are expected.
Exotoxicity: Exotoxicity is expected to be low based on the low water solubility of cellulose acetate. Environmental Fate: No information found in our selected references. Bioaccumulation: Not expected to occur.
This material is NOT classified as a hazardous material by RCRA. Use only licensed transporters and permitted disposal facilities and conform to all laws. Recycle to process, if possible.
