Emergency overview: Appearance and Odor: light amber liquid with slight petroleum odor NO SIGNIFICANT HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS MATERIAL POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS Likely Routes of Exposure: skin contact Occupational exposure to this material has not been reported to cause significant adverse health effects. On the basis of available information, exposure to Welch Duo-Seal® Pump Fluid is not expected to produce significant adverse human health effects when recommended safety precautions are followed. Eye Contact: Minimal eye irritation may occur on short term contact. Skin Contact: Mild skin irritant from prolonged or repeated skin contact. Injection of pressurized hydrocarbons under the skin, in the muscle or into the blood stream requires immediate medical attention Inhalation: Adverse health effects from short-term exposure are not expected to occur. Aspiration of liquid into the lungs can cause severe lung damage or death. Ingestion: Ingestion of small amounts may have laxative effect. Ingestion of large amounts may cause depression, headache, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting. Chronic Health Effects: Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause irritation and/or inflammation, dermatitis or oil acne. Repeated or prolonged inhalation may cause respiratory irritation or other pulmonary effects. Carcinogenic Potential: Does not contain any components at concentrations above 0.1% which are considered carcinogenic by OSHA, IARC. Or NTP. Refer to Section 11 for toxicological information.
Eye Contact: Flush eyes with cool, clean water for at least 15 minutes. If tearing, redness or pain persists, seek medical attention. Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash exposed skin with plenty of soap and water. Seek medical attention if irritation persists. Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting unless directed to by a physician. Aspiration of liquid may cause severe lung damage or death. Do not give anything to drink unless directed to by a physician. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If large amounts are ingested, or irritation or discomfort occurs, seek medical attention immediately. Notes to Physician: The viscosity range for this product is 100 to 400 SUS at 100° F. Ingestion presents a low to moderate risk of aspiration. Careful gastric lavage may be considered to evacuate large quantities of material. Subcutaneous or intramuscular injections require prompt surgical debridement.
Flash Point: 238 °C (480 °F) (Cleveland- open cup) 210 °C (410 °F) (Pensky-Martens ASTM D-93) Autoignition Temperature: Not available Fire Point: Not Available Extinguishing Media: In case of fire, use water spray (fog), foam, dry chemical, or CO2. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: When heated above its flash point material will release ignitable vapors. In enclosed spaces vapors can ignite with explosive force. Mists or sprays may burn at temperatures below the flash point. Fire Fighting Equipment: Fire fighters and others exposed to products of combustion must use full bunker gear including NIOSH-approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus. Hazardous Combustion Products: Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, smoke fumes, unburned hydrocarbons, and trace oxides of sulfur and nitrogen.
Wear appropriate protective equipment. Slipping hazard - do not walk through spilled material. Stop leak if possible without risk of injury. Absorb small spills or cover with dry earth, sand or other inert non-combustible material and place in waste containers for disposal. This material will float on water and can be absorbed with absorbent pad or similar materials. Contain large spills with dikes and transfer the material to appropriate containers for reclamation or disposal. Absorb remaining material or small spills with an inert material and then place in a chemical waste container. Flush residual spill area with water. Prevent entry into waterways or sewers. Comply with all laws and regulations. Refer to Section 13 for disposal information and, Section 15 for reportable quantity information.
HANDLE IN ACCORDANCE WITH GOOD INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE AND SAFETY PRACTICES. THESE PRACTICES INCLUDE AVOIDING UNNECESSARY EXPOSURE AND REMOVAL OF MATERIAL FROM EYES, SKIN AND CLOTHING. Avoid water contamination and extreme temperatures to minimize product degradation Emptied container retains vapor and product residue. Consult appropriate federal, state and local authorities before reusing, reconditioning, reclaiming, recycling or disposing of empty containers or waste residues of this product. Storage: Product is stable under normal conditions of storage and handling. Keep container closed. Keep away from strong oxidizing agents. Do not store at temperatures above 120 °F or in direct sunlight.
An eyewash station and safety shower should be located near the work-station.
Eye Protection: This product does not cause significant eye irritation
or eye toxicity requiring special protection; use of safety glasses equipped
with side shields should be adequate under most conditions of use. Use chemical
splash goggles and/or face shield if splashing or spraying likely or if material
is heated above 125 °F( 51 °C).
Skin Protection: If frequent or prolonged contact is anticipated, use
gloves made of chemical resistant materials such as neoprene or heavy nitrate
rubber. Use heat-protective groves when handling at elevated temperatures.
Protective Clothing: Use clean and impervious protective clothing if
splashing or spraying conditions are present. Remove oil-contaminated clothing
as soon as possible and launder before reuse. Shower promptly if skin contact
occurs. Wear heat protective boots and protective clothing when handling at
elevated temperatures.
Respiratory Protection: Avoid breathing mist. Use NIOSH/MSHA approved
respiratory protection equipment when airborne exposure is excessive.
Consult respirator manufacturer to determine appropriate type equipment
for given application. Observe respirator use limitations specified by
NIOSH/MSHA or the manufacturer. Respiratory protection programs must
comply with 29 CFR 1910.134.
Ventilation: Provide natural or mechanical ventilation to minimize
exposure. If practical, use local mechanical exhaust ventilation at
sources of air contamination such as open process equipment.
