Section 4: First Aid Measures

Take proper precautions to ensure your own health and safety before
attempting to rescue a victim and providing first aid. For specific
information refer to the Emergency Overview in Section of this MSDS.

Inhalation: If symptoms are experienced, move victim to fresh
             air, and obtain medical attention.

Eye Contact: Wash eyes with copious amounts of low-pressure
water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists,
              seek medical advice.

Skin Contact: Flush with plenty of water for 15 minutes. If
               irritation persists, seek medical advice.

Ingestion: Adverse health effects due to ingestion to be
expected. Call a physician in all cases, at once, and
               seek other medical attention.

Section 5: Fire Fighting Measures

NFPA Rating: Not known

Flammability classification:

         Not known

Flash Point/Method: Not applicable

Auto-Ignition Temperature: Not known

Flammable Limits: Lower: Not applicable
                   Upper: Not applicable

Hazardous Combustion Products:

Exposure to water evolves hydrogen selenide which is a
         toxic and flammable material.

Special Conditions to Avoid:

         Moisture exposure.

Extinguishing Media:

Fires: Do not use water! Do use dry chemical, dry sand,
and dry ground dolomite. But never ever use water on a fire with
         cadmium telluride.

Fire Fighting Instructions:

Protective Equipment/Clothing: Wear a NIOSH approved positive
pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and firefighter
turnout gear. Wear long sleeves and chemical goggles for eye
protection. If without risk move material out of the fire area.

Section 6: Accidental Release Measures

Release response:

Wear NIOSH approved respirator, chemical safety goggles,
rubber boots, and heavy rubber gloves. Sweep up product,
if possible and place in a bag and hold for waste disposal.
Keep in dry place and in a way that it will not accidentally
         exposed to moisture.

Reportable Quantities: See Section 15: Regulatory information.

Section 7: Handling and Storage

Handling:

Use full protective gear as described above. Make sure there is
sufficient ventilation in the work area.

Storage:

Keep container dry. Store away from excessive heat and away from
moisture. Keep container closed to prevent contamination and oxidation.

Section 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: If user operations generate dust or fumes,
ventilate area to prevent accumulation.

Personal Protection:

Inhalation: Use appropriate respiratory protection at
all times. If product is to be used as part of a vacuum deposition
process, we would recommend that all vacuum pumps be vented to the
outdoors, in order to avoid any possible release of selenium compounds
    into the laboratory environment.

Skin: Protective clothing such as long sleeves or a lab
coat should be worn. When handling heated materials, also be sure
to use heat-resistant gloves, boots and chemical goggles.

Eye: Always use safety glasses, even for work with small
quantities, such as the loading of a tungsten basket or boat prior
to making a deposition of the material. Accidents occur when least
    expected.

Special note of caution:
If CdSe is evaporated as part of a vacuum thermal deposition, it has been reported to us that the chamber, upon opening, even after repeated venting and purge with dry nitrogen, has a very strong odor. We are told that this order is different from that of any other substance evaporated, it is reminescent of a garlic/metallic smell and taste. We have also been told that after repeated and regular exposure, even outside the lab environment, it seemed one's sweat would have the same smell characteristic order. So one should use caution when venting the vacuum chamber in order to avoid exposure to this odorous compound whatever it might be.
