Section 3: Hazard Identification

Emergency overview:

Long term or repeated exposure to the powder could have harmful
effects resulting in both kidney impairment and bone weakness.
The material is carcinogenic to humans. It is also a mutagen and
irritant. Material should be handled only with gloves in an approved
       hood.

Signal Word

       CAUTION!

Physical Health Hazards:

Dust from powder can cause health problems as described above.

Physical state: Solid crystals in particulate or chunk form,
particles having a size of approximately 150 µm
and in chunk form, individual pieces 3-12 mm in
                  size (along with some "fines").

Color: Light yellow to orange crystal chunks or yellow to
                  brown powder

Odor: None

Odor threshold: No data available

Potential Health Effects:

Routes of exposure

           Eye contact, ingestion, skin contact

Signs and Symptoms of Acute Exposure:

Long term or repeated exposure can affect the lungs. The
material also can have effects on the kidneys and bone tissue,
resulting in kidney impairment and bone weakness. The
           substance is carcinogenic to humans.

Skin contact:

Not known, but skin contact should be avoided.

Inhalation:

           Evaporation at 20° C/ 68° F is negligible. A harmful
concentration of airborne particulates can be reached quickly
           when particles are dispersed.

Eye contact:

Mechanical irritation is possible, other effects not known.

Ingestion:

Ingestion is unlikely but should it occur, acute symptoms are
diarrhea and nausea. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during working
with this material. Wash hands thoroughly after working before
eating or smoking. Residues of this material, if transferred to
a cigarette (or cigar) paper, will give off toxic and irritating
           fumes when burned.

Chronic Health Effects Summary:

Lungs may be effected by repeated or prolonged exposure to
this material. There can be effects on the kidneys by way of
impairment and on bone tissue by way of bone weakness. Material
           is carcinogenic to humans.

Conditions Aggravated by Exposure:

No known conditions are aggravated by this material.

Section 4: First Aid Measures

Take proper precautions to ensure your own health and safety before
attempting to rescue and providing first aid.

Inhalation: If symptoms are experienced, move victim to fresh
             air, and obtain medical attention.

Eye Contact: Wash eyes with clean low-pressure water, removing
contact lenses if possible. Then seek medical advice from
              a qualified physician.

Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing, then rinse skin thorough
with soap and water to remove all traces of the substance.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth, give plenty of water to drink and then
               seek qualified medical attention.

Section 5: Fire Fighting Measures

NFPA Rating: Not known

Flammability classification:

Not classified. However material is combustible and will give off
toxic fumes if burned in a fire.

Flash Point/Method: Not applicable

Auto-Ignition Temperature: Not known

Flammable Limits: Lower: Not applicable
                   Upper: Not applicable

Hazardous Combustion Products:

Toxic and irritating fumes are given off of unknown composition if
burned. If the substance is heated, it will decompose producing
toxic and irritating fumes, including sulfur oxides. It will react
with strong oxidants and reacts with acids forming toxic gas
         (hydrogen sulfide).

Special Conditions to Avoid:

Any open flames when working with the material. Prevent dispersion
of the dust or powder. If possible, work with product in chunk form
instead of in powder form. Avoid unprotected hands, that is, always
use gloves when working with the material.

Extinguishing Media:

          Water spray, dry powders

Fire Fighting Instructions:

Protective Equipment/Clothing: Wear a NIOSH approved positive
pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and firefighter
          turnout gear.

Instructions: Use flooding quantities of water until well after
         fire is out.

Section 6: Accidental Release Measures

Release response:

Sweep spilled substance into containers and if appropriate,
moisten first to minimize or prevent dusting and the generation
of airborne particulates. Then move to a safe place. Do
not let this chemical enter the environment.

Reportable Quantities: Contact local regulatory authorities

Section 7: Handling and Storage

Handling:

Remove all ignition sources from material handling, transfer, and processing
areas where dust may be present. Local exhaust ventilation should be
provided in work areas. Ensure that airborne dust concentrations are
controlled within acceptable OSHA dust standards. If material is used in
spray or fluidized bed operations, see Section 5 of this MSDS for additional
information.

Storage: Keep container dry. Store away from excessive heat
and away from strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, food and feedstuffs.
Keep container closed to prevent contamination.

Section 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: If user operations generate dust or fumes,
ventilate area to prevent accumulation.

Personal Protection:

Inhalation: Use appropriate respiratory protection where atmosphere
exceeds recommended limits. Occupational exposure limits (OEL's): TLV
(as Cd): ppm; 0.01 mg/m3 A2 (ACGIH 1996).
MAK: Class III A2 (1996).

Skin: Protective clothing such as long sleeves or a lab coat
should always be worn when working with this material. Open shoes should
not be worn either. When handling heated materials, also be sure to use
heat-resistant gloves, boots and face protection.

Eye: Always use safety glasses, even for work with small
quantities, such as the loading of small chunks into a tungsten basket
for vacuum evaporation.
