SPI Supplies offers the widest variety of SEM specimen mounts available. Our extensive line includes your choice of aluminum and carbon mounts designed to fit all major brands of scanning electron microscopes. In some parts of the world, what we call SEM "mounts" are called SEM "studs". And yet other parts of the world call them "stubs".
Mounted SEM samples could be one-of-a-kind and a real asset, make sure they are stored in high quality SEM mount storage boxes! And make sure samples are mounted using the double sided conductive adhesive tapes, sheets, and discs and for "touching up" the "steps", use the SPI conductive silver and carbon paints. And if you are the proud owner of a FESEM, and you are unhappy with the extremely short shelf life of chromium coated samples, or even the grain size that you still see, be sure you consider the OPC line of osmium coaters because osmium coats as a completely amorphous layer with no grain size and since it is a precious group metal, it has the inertness of gold and platinum. Surely anyone with experience with the fast oxidation rates of a chromium coating would understand that advantage.
Be sure to check out the SPI Factory Outlet Store for discontinued SEM mounts available at greatly reduced prices!
In addition to the standard aluminum and carbon mounts, we have a full range of specialty mounts, including pyrolytic graphite, SPI Ultra Smooth and even including beryllium planchets. Our own special surface finish that is built into our SPI Lustre mounts is recognized to be a great value, far smoother than a normal lathe finished mount but with a finish closer to that of a "polished" mount. An especially novel kind of mount, the SPI Diamond Planchet, with its extremely hard faceted surface, enables one to "sample" the composition of a surface by "abrading off" a minute sample of the surface-to-be-tested without really altering the surface itself.
Our standard mounts for SEM are made from an aluminum alloy which is specially selected for its machinability so that the surface of the mount as machined is very smooth and ready for use.

For forensic use, as well as other critical applications, we use an alloy which produces fewer analytical artifacts. Each heat is analyzed to assure that bismuth, antimony and lead, of particular interest for gunshot residue studies, cannot be detected by EDS (elements, if present, are in low ppm range). One can also use beryllium planchets for this application.
All of our carbon mounts are spectroscopically pure carbon, purified to reduce all impurities to the less than 10 ppm level, and to a point that no currently available EDS detector could detect. The only extraneous peaks observed from these mounts are of course, carbon, if the EDS detector being used can detect carbon, and an "apparent" (imperceptible to most persons) Si peak, we believe is an artifact from the Bremsstrahlung radiation background curve.

| Not technically speaking a "mount", the new SEMF1 SEM Finder Grid is used as an overlay on top of a normal SEM mount. We recommend for dry samples, the use of the new SEM Finder Grid in conjunction with the SPI Double Sided Conductive Carbon Discs, 10 mm. |
