SPI-Glas™ Brand Glassy (Vitreous) Carbon Substrates (Plates)
Select from a large variety of glassy carbon plates
Chinese
A large assortment of standard sizes in
four different grades of glassy carbon
is now available. We believe this to be the largest off-the-shelf offering of glassy carbon plates in the world."}
Note:
That we use here the terms "glassy carbon substrates" interchangeably with "glassy carbon plates" because some parts of the world and in some industries, they would be known as "plates" but in other markets and industries, they are known as "substrates".
Applications for glassy carbon plates:
We are always amazed at the wide variety of applications being discovered on an on-going basis for the SPI-Glas™ Glassy Carbon Plates. Probably the largest single application is for fuel cell and other electrochemical electrodes. The SPI-Glas glassy carbon plates are also used in "mechanical applications" such as when used as a structural component of a furnace. Researchers all over the world are using the glassy carbon plates in thin film applications. And we are learning now that some users of scanning electron microscopes (SEMs), where high purity is required, are using the glassy carbon substrates to support samples while being examined by SEM/EDS. Because of the unusual surface properties of the glassy carbon, a number of liquids spread far easier on the glassy carbon than on other carbon based substrates. Consequently, the preferred method for the examination of human blood by SEM or other methods is to do the spreading of the blood sample, on glassy carbon.
The glassy carbon substrates are also used for certain thin film deposition experiments. The removal of the glassy carbon is relatively easy using the SPI Plasma Prep II plasma etcher so the deposited coating can be picked up and examined, as is, for TEM or embedded in SPI-Pon™ Epoxy Embedding Resin and thin sectioned. This is a far faster route to TEM data than the more traditional ion milling approach. Of course, substrate effects can be important to one's results and therefore, this kind of reasoning must be done very carefully.
Is glassy carbon "better" than HOPG?
Glassy carbon is relatively expensive and although
HOPG
is also expensive, at least in the case of HOPG, the plate can be cleaved into thinner ribbons, so that in essence can get some number of cleavings out of each plate. And this means the cost per cleaved surface becomes far less costly than the cost of an entire plate. So if you application does not demand the glassy qualities of glassy carbon, consider whether HOPG would work for you.
Thickness:
Our technology presently permits us to make plates up to 6 mm thick. We can not make plates of greater thickness at the present time. What we offer as plates represents the thickest possible glassy carbon plate we can presently produce. And not all plates can be produced in all thicknesses. As the plates get larger and larger, if the thickness is not some minimum amount, there is breakage during the manufacturing.
