Crystalbond 509 Mounting Adhesive
Comments for heat sensitive samples
Introduction:
Very often, when heat-sensitive materials are to be embedded, and one notes the differences in melting
points between Crystalbond 509 vs. Crystalbond 555 and 555 MP [Softening points of 71°C (159.8°F),
52°C (125.6°F), 66°C (150°F) respectively], there is a tendency to gravitate toward
Crystalbond 555.
However, in many instances, this could be an error in judgment. Both Crystalbond 555 and 555MP offer
comparatively much less holding strength than Crystalbond 509. And in many instances, when selected for
this reason, the results tend to be less than expected.
A better alternative sometimes is to try crushing in an
agate mortar and pestle and then dissolve the powder in acetone. The adhesive can then be "painted on" and
it will cure through evaporation of the solvent.
This can be accomplished at a far lower temperature than the melting point of Crystalbond 509.
