These dome magnifiers, often times called magnifying domes, or even "hemispherical magnifiers" look like paper weights,
they are heavy like a paper weight, but their real use is that of a distortion-free
magnifier. The base has been specially treated to keep any friction to a minimum
when moving across the flat surface of the object being examined. We believe one could
say that the magnifier literally "glides" over the flat surface being examined.
The SPI Dome Magnifiers, provide a distortion-free magnified image and the
geometry results in the maximum amount of light reaching the surface under
examination. Because of this feature, a special external light source is
usually not needed. Lens are all special optical grade acrylic, hand crafted
and polished, and exhibit virtually no distortion at the outer circumference.
The magnifying domes are used by the visually impaired, especially for reading
newspapers, magazines, etc. We recommend the 95 mm dome 4x magnification for this
application since an entire newspaper column can be covered in the field of view,
and one can read down an entire column without having to engage in a horizontal
scanning kind of motion. Alternatively, some might find the family of
SPI Supplies
Brand® Magnifying Rulers to be more convenient for reading
down the columns of a newspaper.
Don't be fooled into thinking that these dome magnifiers are anything less
than a fine piece of optics. Because of the high optical quality of the plastic
used, and the methods of construction, the distortion at the edges is kept to
a remarkable minimum.
The SPI Dome Magnifiers come in four different diameters and each is accompanied
with its own velvet storage pouch (and which doubles also as a cleaning medium,
especially to remove fingerprints) to ensure a long useful lifetime.
Diopter values are given for each magnifier.
Note: For
those not familiar with this term, diaopter is a unit of refractive power,
equal to the reciprocal of the focal length (in meters) of a given lens.
