Cargille Laboratories Optical Quality Thermoplastics
For use in microscope slide mounting and other optical coupling
applications
We are happy to present two great families of mounting media, both specially
formulated as optical quality thermoplastics for use in microscope slide
mounting and other optical coupling applications. Select from two different
forms of these products, as a bulk or "stick" formulation.
As a group, these products have a number of outstanding advantages over
older materials they now replace:
- Instant application
- They are thermal mountants and require no "oven time".
- 100% usable
- They are pure materials and contain no solvents.
- Economical
- Relative to the alternatives, the user saves money!
- Reversible
- Thermally reversible, for particle retrieval or re-orientation.
- Solubility in solvents
- Especially soluble in toluene for special techniques or clean up.
- Fluid at 65° C/149° F
- Ideal temperature because it makes a permanent mount and protects
the majority of specimens from thermal changes.
- Environmentally responsible
- Unlike some of the alternatives, these are completely PCB-free.
- Direct replacements for older style media

We are often times asked about "melting points" or other information that would
suggest some kind of a crystalline melting point. We want to make clear that
these are all thermoplastic materials, they do not have crystallinity in the
solid state, and they slowly soften with increasing temperature, rather than
melting at some precisely defined temperature (such as a metal) or temperature
range (such as a metal alloy or most crystalline polymers).
At room temperature, they are quite rigid solids, but they do soften
as they approach the "working temperature" of 60-70° C, at which point
they then can be poured like a liquid. There are of course some
differences in the softening points of these different materials,
but we hope that this bit if discussion, for one who has not worked
with such materials in the past, will be useful information. This also
means that these products are not dissolved in a solvent, which then
evaporates, leaving the active ingredient to "dry" or to "cure". Such
terms have no meaning with these optical quality thermoplastics.

Such statements are available for additional cost at the time of
original purchase.
Remember you can derive the benefits of these fine mountants in two
different forms, either in bulk or "stick" form.
