SPI Series 2+ Stereo Microscope

Binocular Stereo Inspection/Dissection Microscope with added features

Chinese

The Series 2+ Stereo Microscope is mounted on a sturdy curved arm style stand with 2x and 4x objective lenses "standard" on an easily rotated mount. The sturdy binocular head is capable of handling a digital, video or small film camera with an adapter which can be inserted in place of one of the standard 10x eyepieces. The Pixera® digital cameras are an excellent choice for image recording from this microscope.

The only differences between the Series 2+ and the Series 2 are a) the curved arm stand vs. pillar style stand and b) the smaller diameter of the glass plate (60 mm vs. 95 mm) and c) the rotatable binocular head. In short, this is a somewhat "better" choice than the Series 2. For example, the Series 2 microscope would be more appropriate for an intermediate school science class where as the Series 2+ for a high school science class.

Illumination:
Dual illumination is from two different positions, one substage (below) and the other, a ring light from above e.g. epi illumination. Both are LED (light emitting diode) type, which are the most desirable because of their much longer life (e.g. "statistically" 50,000 hours) than conventional halogen bulbs or even conventional fluorescent ring lights. If you think about it, 50,000 hours represents a source continuously operating without rest for 5+ years! We do list a replacement LED source, but it is listed more for psychological reasons than any real concern that one would have to replace the source any time soon. The Series 2 stereo microscope will grow old and after some many years, eventually have to be replaced but rarely for reasons of a failure of the LED sources.

It is unusual to find such high technology illumination in such a low cost stereo microscope. We also are finding that for student or field use, the LED sources are more robust than halogen or fluorescent illumination sources. Teachers tell us all the time that they like the idea that they are freed from the burden of having to regularly replace light sources in their student used microscopes. When used in a test and inspection environment, plant supervision is similarly happy that resources need not be spent replacing illumination sources. These benefits are consistent with our philosophy of delivering to our customers the very highest quality and technology for the very lowest price.

Imaging and use:
The Series 2+ microscope was designed specifically for classroom and K-12 science class applications. "We have since learned that plant management is equally pleased with not having to replace illumination on microscopes used in test and measurement applications. It has almost no removable parts, other than stage clips, glass or opaque inserts and the slip-on objective lens cover.

Ancillary items:
Included with the Series 2+ stereo microscope are a dust cover, eye guards, and spare black/white and frosted viewing plates

Power requirements:
