SPI Supplies® Brand Low Cost Stereo Microscopes
Consider these high quality stereo light microscopes for research, teaching, and inspection applications.
The new family of stereo light microscopes offered by SPI Supplies, are
well-built, robust, compact scientific instruments with built-in
illumination for both transmitted and epi-illumination of specimens. These
stereo microscopes would readily serve almost any purpose in a laboratory
including research, dissection, inspection, forensic, quality control and other applications where
price is important. We have
assembled a full range of accessories that permit the microscope to be
configured in many ways to serve different purposes. Different eyepieces, objectives,
illuminators, stands and stereo head configurations (binocular and trinocular) provide a wide
range of functionality for a microscope head that is well constructed for industrial applications
as well as the K-12, undergraduate and even graduate laboratory. The optics have been
designed so that a digital camera can be easily interfaced to any of the microscopes being offered,
eliminating the need to use film and darkroom chemistries.
Illumination system:
The very latest in LED illumination technology is incorporated into the SPI Supplies Brand of stereo
microscopes. No longer is it necessary to replace a halogen style light source since the life time
of the LED source is essentially "forever". Most of our customers are surprised that such a high quality LED
source could be found in such low cost stereo microscopes. Science teachers who might have a
large number of microscopes for an entire class are especially happy since they are freed from the burden of
having to replace, on an ongoing basis, halogen light sources. The LED illumination source is
also much more "robust" under conditions of student use.
Special comments for K-12 science class teachers:
Although any of these microscopes could be used, the most popular seems to
be the Series 2+
because this model a) has the fewest moveable parts, b) it is the smallest
and c) is the most economical (least expensive). It also has a rotating
objective lens for changing from 2x to 4x.
Special comments for applications in quality control:
Because of the simplicity of operation (non-moveable head) and low
maintenance, the Series 2+
is again a clear choice among our past customers. However for applications
where capturing the image of a sample under inspection is needed, we
recommend the trinocular head Series 3.
Other comments about microscope selection:
Two of the microscopes, Series 3 and Series 2 have moveable heads, whereas
Series 2+ has a fixed head (and is not moveable). Series 3 and Series 2
have the largest stages, whereas the Series 2+ has the smallest stage. The
Series 3 "zooms" whereas the other two do not. And although all three
models can be used with a camera, for the Series 3, this can be done the
most conveniently.
Digital camera selection:
In today's world, one just does not purchase any kind of microscope without a digital
camera. And SPI Supplies offers the for the budget-minded
an amazingly high quality digital camera for an almost ridiculously low price.
Operation of the microscopes:
Alignment of optics is excellent and the visual field is clear and shows
little spherical aberration. In each microscope
the oculars are freely rotating but locked by small set screws to prevent
removal or loss. One of the three
microscopes (Series 2+) is equipped with changeable objectives on a
rotating turret (2x and 4x). The Series 3 has a 1x to 4x zoom before
integrating the various auxiliary objective lens. Note that the Series 2
does not zoom and does not have changeable objective lens although one can
order objective lenses to obtain other magnifications.
