Corning® 7980 Synthetic Flame Fused Silica Microscope Slides

This is the ultimate quartz, better even than GE 124

Introduction:
For the uninitiated, all quartz has not been created equal. Although GE 124 quartz has been used widely by customers of SPI Supplies, and for the most part, is quite acceptable, there is a subset of researchers who, to put it bluntly, are not satisfied with GE 124 and want a quartz like product with even lower impurity levels and therefore lower fluorescence but higher transmission values in the UV.

The "solution" to the "problem" is to use products fabricated not from GE 124 but from Corning® 7980 which is a synthetic flame fused silica, which has inherently lower trace impurities present. Both are "quartz" materials but unlike GE 124, which starts out literally with beach sand, and with all the impurities imaginable that would be found in sand and it is refined from there. But for the production of Corning 7980, a gaseous form of a silane compound, which can be made to ultra pure levels, is reacted with a flame, resulting in a quartz product, with all of the properties of GE 124 but which has far superior transmittance properties because of the higher level of purity.

Why use quartz at all?
There are a number of applications for quartz slides and cover slips in the microscope laboratory. And for some of these applications, no matter how much transmittance there is, there are some who just need more. And those are the ones who become prospective customers of the SPI Supplies Brand of fused silica slides and cover slips.

Available products in Corning 7980:
We are starting out with just a small listing of products in Corning 7980. But we could make quite easily all of the currently standard quartz products (GE 124) in Corning 7980. They would look the same and "feel" the same but only the trace element impurity levels would be reduced.

We do not as of yet have a transmittance curve to present for comparing with GE 124 but those who have used Corning 7980, for the most critical of experiments, want only to use Corning 7980.
