SPI Easy-Cut™ Ultra/Glass and Histo/Glass

Sharp edges for sharp looking micrographs!

Spanish

Specially formulated glass is manufactured, and then specific sheets are carefully culled to SPI's high technical standards for good knife-making properties. They are then cut to the high tolerances expected for the production of accurate, consistent knives. You won't find a better glass for your critical microtomy applications. These all-glass strips are prewashed, SPI boxed and ready to use without further treatment. SPI Supplies is one of the world's oldest suppliers of high quality knife glass for microtomy. The SPI maroon colored boxes are a familiar site in the world's finest laboratories.

Selection of the right glass:
There are fundamentally two different types of glass knife makers, one designed for making knives for thick sectioning only and the other, for making thin sections as well as thick sections. The most common type of knife maker of the first type, that is, thick sections only, is of the "Ralph" knife maker style. And for use with that kind if knife maker, the lower cost "histology" glass is just fine. But when using the knife makers designed for making knives for thin sections as well, it is better to use the "better" glass, or that designed for thin sections.

What are the differences between the two types of glass?
Although the histology glass is cut from the same identical glass, it is also cut in a somewhat faster more efficient (e.g. lower cost) way, and one that does not leave the edges quite as perfect and precise as would be required for the making of glass knives for ultramicrotomy. In other words, the "better" glass strips, those that are recommended for thin ultramicrotomy sections in particular, and where the state of the glass edge is much more important, when you hold the two qualities side by side, you often times can see the difference. But for the Ralph knife maker, this is not so important because the back edge of the triangular knife comes from the 6 mm thick glass edge. For the other knife makers, however, the back edge of the knife does come out from that surface, and that is why the state of that surface is so much more important.

We have always found that the best glass knives made with a Ralph knife maker come from 6mm thick glass. And also, remember that the histologist can also use triangular knives of different thicknesses, so in addition to 6mm glass, there is also, 6.4, 8, 10 and 12 mm.

Note: For those using the Messer™ Knife Maker Model Type C, one need not worry about the quality of the glass, because the big advantage of the Messer is that ordinary float glass, from your local glass shop will work just fine and produce a quality of knife edge as good as or better than is possible with any other knife maker.
