SPI offers the full range of ancillary tools needed for the production of
high quality glass knives for microtomy. Anyone having done this kind of
work understands well that the quality of the knife edge is the single most
important factor in terms of the ability to obtain high quality sections.
We will not apologize for what might seem like outrageous prices for some of
these tools, for example, the glass breaking pliers. However, they are
incomparable, and this kind of precision is absolutely necessary in order to
get, reproducible, knife after knife, the kind of quality needed, and
without having to through out two out of three "tries", which itself is time
consuming if not also wasteful.
Special note for other applications:
We are well aware that there are other applications for glass breaking
"tools". In general, such applications do not require tools of this
precision and high specifications. Or putting it another way, one need not
spend this amount of money on their glass breaking tools for applications
outside of microtomy. If you are involved with such other applications and
believe this higher precision especially with the glass breaking pliers, we
would be happy to have you as our customer, but you have to understand that
these tools are not returnable once purchased and tried out. Our own
experience is with the microtomy application and we really don't have
information about other applications.
Make sure you really need these tools!
Remember that if you are considering the purchase of these tools to make
glass knives but you already have a histology glass knife maker,
you won't need these tools, and to purchase them would be a duplication of resources.
You will always get a high yield of better knives when using the
