SPI Silicon Nitride Membrane Windows
Try out our custom manufacturing process
With the growing number of applications outside of TEM (transmission electron microscopy),
we are being asked with ever increasingly greater frequency, to produce membrane windows
custom made for particular customers with particular applications.
As we gain more and more experience with these new applications (for example, windows
for x-ray microscopes), we hope there will emerge some common denominator products that
numbers of researchers want so that we can add them to our off-the-shelf product line.
But if you are contemplating a special run wafer, please always keep the following in mind:
- We can make pretty much whatever anyone wants us to make. A
special run wafer would cost roughly $2000 to $2500.
- The outside dimensions, or frame size, are standard, 3 mm, however we can make just about
whatever any one might want. For example, the x-ray windows typically are 5 mm square.
The smaller the size of the frame, the large the number of frames that can be produced from a
single wafer. If the frame size is 5 mm, then the frames are produced in an array that is
10x10 in size for a total of 100 pieces. If the outside frame dimensions was 2.65 mm, then
the array would be 18x18 or a total of 324 frames. The cost of the
wafer is approximately constant irrespective of the number of frames produced per wafer.
- The thickness of the membrane window can cover the range of thicknesses of our standard products.
Presently, 25 nm is the lower limit to which we can make the membrane thickness.
- The standard thickness for the silicon wafer is 200µm. However we can work with wafers of
other thickness, for example, 315, 381 and 525 µm.
- The nitride membrane window is made standard with stoichiometric
silicon nitride. However, we also could produce the membrane windows from silicon rich
low-stress nitride.
If you think you might be a prospective customer for a custom manufactured wafer, the best thing
would be to
