Microtomes and Ultramicrotomes

Specimen pins:
Many specimens are of a nature that they just can not be "clamped" with the microtome "chuck". These are the kinds of samples that would be mounted on an appropriate specimen pin. Typically the specimen is suspended in sucrose, a sample is picked up by the end of the pin, the sample is then quenched into liquid nitrogen, and the pin is then transferred to the pin adapter and then placed into the cryo ultramicrotome. The size of the specimen determines the diameter of the pin used, the larger the sample, the larger the pin diameter.
