Introduction:
The SPI Supplies® Brand Slot Grids for TEM
have proved to be very popular with TEM
users over the years in part because of their high stability and also, because of their
economical cost. The original slot grids were first
produced in the last 1950’s and for nearly 50 years, there have been no real improvements
in the slot grid products or their design.
But as more and more researchers found they had the need to look at larger and larger sections of a sample without the interference of grid bars, and yet others doing electron tomography on their samples found they could not tilt to the required angles without encountering grid bars, there has evolved a series of new grid products that allow one to accomplish their research objectives. SPI Supplies recognized the need to deliver to customers a slot grid that would be more stable and we introduced in 2004 the SPI Supplies® Brand Silicon Nitride Membrane Window Slot Grid for electron tomography and other applications requiring large areas of grid without the interference of grid bars. The membrane is very very flat, far flatter than could ever be possible with a supported (conventional TEM) grid and this made it much easier for the putting together of the different images when doing electron tomography.
The silicon nitride membrane window grids are of course outstanding in this application but some researchers do tend to find them a bit on the expensive side. We realize that and we will even apologize for it, but there is nothing we can really do about the high costs associated with the processing of a silicon wafer.
We can now offer a lower cost alternative: The Supplies® Brand Tri-Slot™ Reinforced "Window Pane" Grids. These new patterns permit a much improved support for the sections and anyone using the popular design, 2 mm x 1 mm slot grids would find the new patterns we call the Tri-Slot designs, to be a real improvements in stability of their sections when being viewed in the TEM. In addition, because of the reduced "pane" size, one can get by with thinner support films, be it Formvar, carbon or any other support medium with a resulting improvement in contrast. The thickness of the Tri-Slot grids is comparable to the thickness of regular mesh and slot grids (50 µm) and therefore can be handled in substantially the same way as conventional slots or mesh grids.
