Use titanium grids when high temperature and inertness are needed. For ion milling applications, we believe that the SPI "moly" grids would probably be, for most users, a better choice.
One of the biggest problems faced by the researcher doing high temperature studies, either in situ or outside of the microscope is the need to match the thermal coefficient of expansion of the grid and the support film material. For carbon filmed grids, holey or lacey carbon support films tend to be more stable than carbon films without the "holes". If you are not set up to make these support films yourself, consider SPI's custom support film services.
Titanium has the surprising property that it is still electrically conductive down to liquid helium temperatures and is therefore attractive for very low temperature cryogenic studies.
