Bulk Purchase™ Grids:
We at SPI Supplies are always looking for new and innovative ways to bring products to the
laboratories of our customers for lower prices. As part of that longstanding goal, we are
now offering a wholesale grid purchasing program open to our regular "retail" customers.
We are achieving these lower prices two ways: First, we are giving a quantity price break.
But the second reason is more complicated to explain if also, not more interesting.
One "secret" of the economics of grid production is that the "inspection step" is a
very significant part of the total cost of making grids. As it is now, any other
grids that are sold under the SPI Supplies name are literally individually inspected
to make sure that the grid has been made in its entirely and without defects.
Grids with a few missing grid bars for example wold be summarily rejected.
With the passing of time, the production methods used for the making of the grids offered by
SPI Supplies have become more and more efficient, so that the inspection step is becoming
less and less important. As one of our customers told us recently, when we were still in
the talking stage about offering grids at wholesale pricing, "so what if I have to pull
out a few rejects now and then." Of course, we want to be on the safe side to we load
each vial, not with the advertised quantity of 100 grids, we load them to contain 120
grids so if indeed a few are thrown out by our customers, they are still ending up with
bonus grids for their trouble.
Most of our customers know about our highly successful line of StudenTek™ products
(for students, featuring "student quality" instead of the top-of-the-line research quality).
But these grids are not really of lower quality. They are indeed research quality.
It is just that from time to time, as the vial of grids gets used, one might find
one or two grids that are incompletely formed and when such a grid is encountered,
it should just be thrown out and you can be happy knowing that you are earning
"bonus grids" for doing this amount of inspection yourself instead of having SPI
Supplies do this inspection step for you.
How the grids are packaged:
Each package contains 100 vials, each with the industry standard 100 grids plus
20 "bonus" grids. One bulk package of copper or nickel grids contains a total of
1200 individual grids (gold grids are supplied in vials of industry standard 50
grids plus 10 bonus grids). We want to stress again that these are not the
"standard orthogonal" grids in different packaging, but an entirely new type
of grid taking advantage of the newest technology that results in substantially
higher yields of good grids and with a lower cost of production. For those
wanting to "try out" the "Bulk Purchase" grids, we will offer trial size vials
of 10 grids.
