SPI-Chem Potassium Permanganate
Additional useful information about potassium permanganate
When dissolved in water, this ionic compound completely dissociates to form
K+ and MnO4-
ions. Since the K+ ion is stable and non-
reactive in aqueous solution, the chemical reactivity of the solution is
essentially that of the MnO4- ion.
Solutions if MnO4- ion exhibit a strong
purple color so that its presence is always easily detected.
One should be aware that permanganate ion tends to oxidize not only the
desired groups but also any organic matter in the water.
A number of widely diverse applications for potassium permanganate have been
developed over the years a few of which are given below:
As a bactericidal, fungicidal, and algaecidal agent in cooling towers,
evaporative condensers, ornamental ponds, cooling fountains, to give a few
examples. Potassium permanganate is also used as a surface disinfectant,
sanitizer, and deodorizer.
Types and methods of application: As a disinfectant, potassium
permanganate is diluted and applied to hard, non-porous, inanimate surfaces.
For the other uses described above, potassium permanganate is added directly
to the water to be treated.
