SPI Chem™ Room Temperature Storage Conditions
Recommended room temperature storage practices
SPI Chem chemical products, for the most part, can be safely stored at room temperature. However, we
recommend such storage in an environment that is cool, dark, and relatively dry in order to result in
the very longest life. Also, caps should always be tightly screwed on. And all chemicals, should be
stored in a cabinet specially approved for the storage of that particular class.
What is room temperature?
This is an imprecise statement of temperature. For chemical calculations that are assuming "room temperature",
21°C (70°F) is often times the "presumed" temperature. But for purposes of storage, it is
generally presumed to be that temperature range that would be considered "comfortable" by humans, and that is
usually presumed to be in the range of 20-23°C (68-73°F).
While we always urge customers to purchase in larger quantities in order to make tight laboratory
budgets stretch further, just the same, one should never be buying a life time supply of anything.
We urge our customers to inspect regularly any chemicals of any type from any source in their lab for any
sign of product deterioration, in which case disposal procedures should be followed and the outdated
chemicals removed from the laboratory environment. Typical signs of product deterioration, but not
limited to, would be for instance, corrosion of bottle caps, signs of leakage at caps, or precipitate
formation in what should ordinarily be a clear liquid.
We believe the integrity of lab experiments is just too important to run the risk of generating
spurious results or worst yet, artifacts which in extreme cases, actually do get published with
extreme embarrassment to the author(s).
