SPI Supplies Refrigerated Storage Recommendations

Extend the useful shelf life of many items just by storing them under refrigerated conditions!

Comments about "store refrigerated" products:
When a product deteriorates with time, and it is a "rate" controlled process, then refrigerated storage will slow down that deterioration rate, and if you are a believer in the Arrhenius Equation the you would know that for every 10 C° there is a reduction in reaction rate of one order of magnitude (e.g. 10X). By way of example, if a reaction-prone chemical reagent, instead of being stored at 20° C is stored at 0° C, then that would represent two orders of magnitude temperature drop, or changes would now be occurring 100X more slowly.

For the SPI-Chem™ brand of chemicals, those that we believe can have their useful shelf life extended substantially, we have denoted as requiring "cold storage". Of course, many chemicals won't be so effected, and hence there is no point in keeping them under refrigeration and they can be stored at room temperature with essentially the same end result. Certain other products in our SPI Supplies product line are recommended to be stored under refrigeration, even though they are not normally thought of as being "cold storage" products. For example, all SPI Supplies® Brand transfer symbol sheets, indeed all transfer symbol sheets that we know about, contain a small amount of a plasticizer and just like a lawn type garden hose, when its plasticizer diffuses out, and it become brittle, so will transfer symbol sheets undergo the same kind of plasticizer migration and become brittle (and useless). However, storing transfer symbol sheets refrigerated, exactly like one would store photographic paper and film, has to potential to extend transfer symbol sheet shelf life as well. We recommend storage at 4° C. Certain products that are aqueous based and sealed in glass (e. g. aqueous glutaraldehyde) should not be stored below 4° C because of possible breakage risk from the coefficient of thermal expansion if the solution should freeze. When anything that has been refrigerated is taken out from the refrigerated area for use, it is important that it be allowed to warm up to room temperature, other wise there is the risk of moisture condensation in into the volume of the container, reducing the efficiency of some of the SPI-Chem products, for example.

Virtually all adhesive products, including SPI Supplies Brand Double Sided Conductive Carbon Adhesives (sheets, rolls, and tapes), one projects that they will not be used within 12 months of their receipt, then we would suggest refrigerated storage in order to preserve their excellent characteristics.
