Introduction:
Uranyl chloride (UO2Cl2) is an unstable, bright yellow colored compound of uranium. It forms large free-flowing sand-grain-sized crystals which are soluble in water, alcohols and ethers. Uranyl chloride, and its two hydrates, (UO2Cl2·H20 and UO2Cl2·3H20) decompose in the presence of light. This photosensitivity over the years, from time to time, has attracted scientific interest and there have been various unsuccessful attempts to develop photographic applications using these uranyl compounds. As with most other uranium compounds, this one also is fluorescent.

Production methodology:
Uranyl chloride is formed when chlorine gas is passed over uranium dioxide when it is maintained at a "red hot" temperature.

Applications:
We know there are some applications as an electron dense stain in electron microscope sample preparation protocols but we have never seen any such protocols published. We would appreciate anyone pointing us in the direction of such a publication (s).

Extractive geological processes have also been developed whereby uranium chloride is used in a process to extract uranium from uranium-containing concentrates.

Radioactivity statement:
This material is made from depleted uranium, meaning that it is uranium from which the radioactive isotopes have been greatly reduced in concentration.

Health and environmental
Uranyl chloride is highly toxic by both inhalation and ingestion. Cumulative effects are also probable with the target organs being the liver and kidneys. It is toxic to aquatic organisms, and may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment. As with all compounds of uranium, even depleted uranium, it is radioactive to a degree dependent on its isotope ratios.

Restriction on shipments:
Uranium-containing compounds, as well as uranium metal are subject to special restrictions from both the United States and other governments both for export from the USA as well as for importation into other countries.

Shipping regulations:
UN 2910
