SPI-Dry Specimen Storage Box
Use instructions for SPI SEM Mount Storage Boxes
Place the SPI Indicator Desiccant Capsules
into the small center cavities. For maximum desiccating action, seal the box seam with
a strip of 3M® Brand Scotch Tape or equivalent.
When samples are being stored, especially when using desiccant capsules, remember
to keep the storage box closed as much as possible. Replace the capsules when color
fades from deep blue to dark pink. Capsules can be rejuvenated by heating in a lab
oven for several hours at 90° C (194° F) driving off the absorbed moisture and recycled
this way for an essentially unlimited number of times.
Note:
Prolonged storage of reactive samples in these boxes is not recommended.
One very important example would be the storage of OTO-stained biological
samples. Apparently the residual osmium tetroxide reacts in some anomalous
way with the plasticizer found in the plastic base plate of the storage box,
resulting is the growth of some as-of-now not analyzed features that
completely cover the surface, rendering the sample useless for further
observation.
