While the book is directed primarily to technicians in training, its integrated, authoritative content will prove useful to anyone involved with TEM. This is one of those "timeless" kinds of books that even though it is a few years since publication date, the kind of basic and fundamental information it contains never really get out-of-date.

Emphasizing that a methodical, disciplined approach is the key to success, the author details a single and uniformly rigorous set of procedures. She delineates simplified, standardized methods that produce optimal specimens, micrographs, and prints. This meticulosity is applied, in turn, to specimen preparation; thin and thick sections; staining; special procedures; principles, operation and care of the instrument; and darkroom techniques. As part of these discussions, the author covers such essential areas as supplies and maintenance, record keeping, safety and performance standards, and evaluation. Scores of illustrations amplify the text, and thorough references guide the reader to other resources.
